Electrochemical Test Engineer
Twelve Benefit
Twelve is a new kind of chemical company built for the climate era. Our breakthrough technology eliminates emissions by turning CO2 into essential products. We are a team of scientists, engineers and problem solvers on a mission to fundamentally shift the way the world addresses climate change and lead the transition to a fossil free future with our carbon transformation technology.
Overview
Twelve is an industrial technology company pioneering carbon transformation. Using our proprietary electrochemical platform, we convert CO₂ into essential chemicals and fuels to displace fossil inputs in global supply chains. As part of the AirPlants team, the Electrochemical Test Engineer will be directly involved in evaluating the performance and reliability of membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) and electrolyzer stacks under varied operational regimes. This role plays a critical function in identifying performance-limiting phenomena and enabling scalable, high-efficiency CO₂ reduction systems.
What You Will Do
The Electrochemical Test Engineer is accountable for the commissioning, operation, and maintenance of test stands used to evaluate MEA and stack-level performance. The engineer will perform structured testing campaigns, collect high-fidelity electrochemical and process data, and conduct failure diagnostics across a range of experimental conditions. The role requires collaboration with materials science, systems engineering, and process development teams to support rapid learning cycles, hardware validation, and performance optimization for commercial deployment.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
Operate and maintain electrochemical stack test stands including calibration, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance of instrumentation and auxiliary systems (e.g., gas handling, thermal management, power supply interfaces).
Plan and execute experiments targeting key performance metrics such as current density, overpotential, impedance spectra, gas crossover, and MEA degradation pathways.
Perform root cause analysis of performance anomalies using electrochemical diagnostics (e.g., EIS, polarization curves, CV), thermal and fluid data, and failure trend analysis.
Generate technical reports and visualizations that synthesize large datasets into actionable insights to inform engineering decisions.
Interface with cross-functional teams to align test conditions with real-world process environments and ensure reproducibility and traceability across testing platforms.
Draft and revise SOPs for stack test operation and experimental procedures. Support MOC documentation when test hardware or protocols are modified.
Promote and uphold safety standards in a high-throughput laboratory and pilot plant environment, participating in hazard assessments and safety reviews.
General Accountability
The Electrochemical Test Engineer is expected to provide technical leadership in executing reliable and reproducible stack testing campaigns. This includes ensuring data quality, minimizing test downtime, and contributing to the mechanistic understanding of stack degradation and variability. The engineer is responsible for supporting performance benchmarking and hardware screening efforts necessary to de-risk and accelerate MEA development.
Review of Major Deliverables Required by Electrochemical Test Engineer Include, but are not Limited to the Following:
Validated experimental procedures and protocols for electrochemical testing
Comprehensive data packages including test conditions, key performance indicators, and diagnostic outputs
Weekly reporting on stack health, failure trends, and data quality metrics
Troubleshooting logs and design recommendations based on electrochemical behavior
Updated SOPs and risk assessments for test infrastructure and operations
Real-time technical communication with development teams to iterate on design-of-experiments
Development of Stack Testing Engineering Deliverables
The engineer will be responsible for contributing to test design documentation, including definition of test matrices, control parameters, risk mitigation strategies, and instrumentation layouts. Deliverables must support traceability, version control, and alignment with engineering quality standards, enabling integration of test results into the product development lifecycle.
Preliminary Testing Execution Plan
Initial focus will be on stabilizing and qualifying electrochemical stack test infrastructure, including control loop verification, sensor integration, and baseline trials. The engineer will lead test planning to probe MEA durability, efficiency, and failure thresholds under relevant temperature, humidity, and gas composition conditions. The execution plan includes diagnostics correlation, data integrity validation, and iterative refinement of test conditions to accelerate MEA performance optimization and design validation.
